Music, Singing and the Mind

Why singing matters for children

Deep down I think we all know that music and singing is deeply impactful for children- all we have to do is reflect on your own childhood and how the songs we learned then have stayed with us all these years! Whether we like it or not!

But the science supports the the impact of music too! Both Singing and music are powerful tools for learning and retention, but ALSO for emotional development in children, with extensive research supporting their benefits.

Singing helps children process and express complex emotions, fostering emotional regulation and resilience. A study by Saarikallio (2011) found that children use music as a tool for emotional self-regulation, with songs serving as a means to cope with difficult feelings or to enhance positive emotions.

Additionally studies show that music, particularly song, improves memory and helps children retain information more effectively by engaging multiple areas of the brain.

And if it couldn't get any better, music in group settings ALSO promotes social bonding and empathy, which contribute to emotional growth. Together, these findings highlight the dual importance of music in both enhancing learning and supporting emotional development, making it an invaluable resource in children's education and overall well-being.

Here are Soul Splash™️ Kids we truly believe in the power of music and song to support children's emotional development and create sessions and resources intentionally with this in mind.
